General Instructions

Pre-registration

To speed registration, fill in the Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper or Teashop entry form as applicable and send this with the entrance fee to the organiser. For those entering on the day, forms will be available at Pontcanna Scout Hall. After registration, you will be given your checkpoint card, ready to start!

For each route, the event will start from the Pontcanna Scout Hall, Cardiff (GR 167775) (see here for map) where there is ample car parking (£3.50 for the day). The walks will also be controlled from here, and naturally finish here.

Entrants should arrive for registration by:

• 0730 to 0815 for the Gold Route. On arriving go to the appropriate Registration Desk in the Hall where you will be registered and given your Checkpoint Card. There will also be a random kit check where some entrants will be checked for the equipment shown on the Equipment Checklist tab or click here for list. After you receive the Checkpoint Card you may begin the walk no later than 0815.


• 0830 to 0900 for the Silver Route. On arriving go to the appropriate Registration Desk in the Hall where you will be registered and given your Checkpoint Card. There will also be a random kit check where some entrants will be checked for the equipment shown on the Equipment Checklist tab or click here for list. After you receive the Checkpoint Card you may begin the walk no later than 0900.


• 0915 to 0950 for the Bronze route. On arriving go to the appropriate Registration Desk in the Hall where you will be registered and given your Checkpoint Card. There will also be a random kit check where some entrants will be checked for the equipment shown on the Equipment Checklist above.
  After being registered proceed to the coach waiting outside. The coach will depart at 1000 and drop walkers off at Taffs Well (Grid Ref. 124831) to begin the walk by 1030. Please note that entries on the day will not be accepted for the Bronze Route.


• 1015 to 1050 for the Copper route. On arriving go to the appropriate Registration Desk in the Hall where you will be registered and given your Checkpoint Card. After being registered proceed to the coach waiting outside. The coach will depart at 1100 and drop walkers off at Cefn Onn Country Park (Grid Ref. 178836) to begin the walk by 1130. Note: You will also be given an outline map with directions. It will be up to you to navigate back to the Pontcanna Scout Hall. You must also bring waterproofs and have appropriate shoes and refreshments for a 6 mile walk. Please also note that entries on the day will not be accepted for the Copper Route.


• Anytime Between 1100 and 1400 for the Teashop Route. On arriving go to the appropriate Registration Desk where you will be registered and given your Checkpoint Card. Note: You will also be given an outline map with directions. It will be up to you to navigate the route out to the south entrance of Bute Park and back to the Pontcanna Scout Hall. When you receive your Checkpoint Card you may begin the walk. no later than 1400. You must also bring waterproofs and have appropriate shoes and refreshments for a 3 mile walk.



Procedure at each checkpoint

You must visit each checkpoint on your chosen route, as specified on your Checkpoint Card. The lists of Checkpoints are also shown on the 'Timetables' tab or click here to see them. On arrival hand your card to the checker who will record your entry number and mark your card. Your card will then be returned to you.

Unmanned Checkpoints: A single letter on an A3 size sheet are located at these Checkpoints. Note the letter in the appropriate box on your Checkpoint Card.

Checkpoint Closing Times: Checkpoint closing times are shown on the 'Timetables' tab. Walkers arriving at these checkpoints after this time must retire. After this time, make your way directly to the event base at Pontcanna Scout Hall.

Procedure at finish

At the Scout Hall present your card at the check-in desk. If it is correctly marked you will receive a certificate confirming your achievement of completing The Save Our Cardiff Reservoirs Walk Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper or the Teashop Route. Light refreshments will be available at Pontcanna Scout Hall for all entrants between 1430 and 2000. Unless there are unforeseen circumstances the event will close at 2000.
